Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
