Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
