Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
