Offspring of Ex- South African Leader Zuma Denies Terror-Related Allegations as Trial Begins
The child of ex- South African Leader Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the commencement of her court case in the port city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over remarks she made on social media several years back during deadly protests in South Africa that came after the arrest of her father.
A seven-day period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of inciting this violence and is charged with charges of provocation to commit terrorism and public violence.
Context of the Case
The protests were focused in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for disobeying a court order to testify at an inquiry into accusations of impropriety while he was serving as president.
The defendant has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past calling the government's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also consistently said the charges against her were an effort to address political scores with her father after he founded his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.
Support and Legal Defense
This was supported by the foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the ex-leader and his kin.
A few of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other party leaders were present at the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the proof presented by prosecutors is insufficient and does not have concrete proof for a guilty verdict.
