The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
