The Last of Us Director's Fresh Project That Looks Very Different Yet Expands Upon Familiar Concepts.

The acclaimed co-director behind a legendary franchise is crafting a new venture to video games. His new project, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the first release from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on his previous work with a focus on reactive companion characters.

An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey

Unveiled during a major gaming event, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a character-puzzle-platformer. You guide an elderly witch, a hero that defies traditional video game heroics. This central concept originated in a desire to deconstruct standard narrative tropes.

"Imagine if you were without combat prowess? Perhaps you are somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" asked Straley. "The concept seemed really fascinating to think about what makes a hero. Heroism involves persevering against challenges, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

Although this project seems unfamiliar on the surface, its most significant advancement is a direct continuation the technology seen in The Last of Us. The entire project was inspired by a central inquiry: "How could one create an AI partner more dynamic and responsive to the player?"

The companion creature within this adventure isn’t an average NPC. It is essentially a learning entity which observes and responds in three key stages. To begin with, it explores with wonder, potentially leading to silly antics. Subsequently, it enters a playful state. Finally, it watches and learns to learn how things work.

  • For example: If the creature sees an object being placed, it grasps the physical act but not the reason.
  • It will then start picking up various things and try slotting them, repeating what it saw.
  • Understanding comes solely through accidental success an obstacle, teaching through experience.

Where Every Playthrough Differs

This intricate technology is designed to create a deeply personal experience. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience instead of a linear, combat-centric story.

"Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns for this project, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The core appeal between these characters is that each individual player will inevitably create unique moments and stories unlike anyone else's."

This focus on organic narrative born from interaction, the new title represents both a continuation and a drastic departure from Straley's well-known franchises. This adventure is currently in development for computer systems.
