Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
