Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.

Spoiler Warning: The following reveals crucial plot points for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the encounter was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
